The Carle Place School District recently welcomed Richard Banyon to its administrative team. Banyon will serve as the district’s interim assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction starting this week, filling in for the spot left by Christine Finn who left the position for the same one at the Herricks School District.

Banyon has more than 40 years of experience as a classroom teacher, guidance counselor, dean, building administrator and central office administrator in New York City and Long Island. He recently served as the Deputy Superintendent of the Malverne School District. He has also coauthored several books.

This is Banyon’s second time coming to the Carle Place School District; from 2000-2003, he was the interim assistant superintendent before Dave Flatley (the district’s current superintendent) came into the position.

He’s looking forward to returning to Carle Place, saying that this is one of his favorite districts.

“I like the fact that it’s small. You get to know the kids really well,” said Banyon. “And it’s a small campus. You can walk from one building to another. It makes it very intimate and it’s a close knit feeling.”

Banyon also praised the district’s administrators and teachers.

“The teachers and administrators know the value of education, and they know what makes good character in children and try to instill it in what they say and what they do,” he said.

Banyon has been hired through June and is looking forward to working closely with chairs and administrators to continue the implementation of the Common Core and help them with the new teacher evaluation system (APPR).

“I’ve always worked hard and given it my best efforts,” said Banyon. “I hope I can live up to the Carle Place standards.”
