UPDATE: Mayor Scott Strauss declared a state of emergency in the Village of Mineola in anticipation of the approaching blizzard.

This emergency declaration is issued pursuant to New York State law and will enable village departments to better prepare in advance of the blizzard’s impact and to address storm related situations as they arise.

The emergency declaration remains in effect until rescinded.

The Village of Mineola has been closely monitoring the blizzard’s progress and making appropriate preparations since yesterday morning, including coordinating with village, town, county, and state emergency planning agencies.

The Village of Mineola will suspend garbage pickup immediately and will resume Thursday, Jan. 29.

The National Weather Service has issued a blizzard warning for Long Island for Monday through Wednesday.  1-3 inches of snow are expected Monday, followed immediately by 20-30 inches accompanied by high winds Monday night through Wednesday night.

The Village of Mineola has already begun snow emergency preparations. Residents and businesses are advised that snow removal operations begin before snowfall and continue during and after snowfall.

Village officials say all vehicles be removed from all streets, and remain off streets, until after snow removal is completed.

The village code requires that vehicles be removed from streets whenever at least two inches of snow falls to allow for streets to be cleared.

Due to the scope of this snow event, officials say code enforcement officers will be aggressively enforcing this regulation in order to allow for snow removal and emergency response access.
