The Lady Comets basketball team got back to their winning ways on Saturday, Feb. 1 after defeating Plainview 54-32 at Hicksville High School. Hicksville had lost their last three games prior to Saturday’s win and now one more victory is all they need to propel themselves into the county playoffs.
“We have two more games to get it done and I expect us to play like our playoff lives are on the line,” said head coach, Frank Locascio. “We have been putting in a lot of effort and hard work at practice and I expect us to come out and play these next two games like we played today.”
The way the Lady Comets played was aggressive on offense and tenacious on defense holding Plainview to only 10 pints in the first quarter and 19 points at halftime.
The game was never in doubt as team leaders, Atalah Eady had a game high 22 points and senior, Jillian Wynne hit some clutch shots from the perimeter.
Eady, who is a junior, uses her big frame to establish herself in the post and she has a nice soft touch at the rim.
“I know I can get points down low especially when I get a nice pass inside from Jillian,” said Eady. “We just have a connection with each other and overall I think our team chemistry is very good and it carries over into the games.”
She said that the only thing she needs to watch out for is her fouls. She had four in the game.
“I can’t let myself get into to foul trouble because I know my team needs me out there on the floor,” Eady says.
The remaining games on the Lady Comets schedule were an away game against East Meadow on Feb. 3 and a final regular season game at home against Valley Stream Central Monday, Feb. 9.
“If we win just one of those games we’ll be going into the playoffs as a 10, 11 or 12 seed,” said Locascio. “If we’re able to pull out both games we could end up as an 8, 9 or 10 seed, it all depends. Right now I see us as a 10 seed going in.”
Wynne said that she doesn’t want to go out missing the playoffs in her last year of high school.
“When we have our bigs, (like Atalah) on point finishing it gets our team rhythm going like it did today,” said Wynne.
The Lady Comets have already beaten East Meadow and Valley Stream Central in back to back games in early January. Now just one more victory over either of those teams will automatically qualify them for the playoffs.
