Obituary: Joseph C. Bartlotti

A WWII veteran, Joseph honorably served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946; as sergeant and armorer technician grade 4 in the Pacific Theater, he saw action in New Guinea, the Philippines (Luzon) and the invasion of Japan. He was awarded the American Service Medal, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, Philippines Liberation Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal and WWII Victory Medal.

Joe played semi-pro after WWII and was inducted into the Glen Cove Hall of Fame. He was the star center for the Glen Cove AA team in the 1940s and early ’50s. He was also a “three letterman” playing on the Glen Cove HS varsity football, golf and basketball teams.

Joe was born on July 18, 1923, in the small coal mining town of Boyers, PA, the oldest son of eight children. The family moved to the Forest Park section of Glen Cove in the 1930s after their father died of emphysema from working in the mines. Joe married, raised his family and lived in Glen Cove the rest of life. He dedicated his life to hard work in support of his family. Joe was a loyal employee and worked for three generations of the Walsh family at Colonial Wire and Cable Company. He started on the factory floor and earned his way to foreman helping to build a successful operation for over 67 years, working until he was 89-years-old and his legacy continues today. In addition, he caddied every weekend at the Nassau Country Club in Glen Cove starting at the early age of 9 and continued until he was 85.

Joseph was married to his wife Patricia for more than 61 years, has a son Robert, daughter Nancy, granddaughter Ashley, grandson Jared, great-granddaughter Abbie, son-in law Steven, sister Marie Butelli, niece Josephine Deveau, and many nieces  and nephews. He has been unconditionally supported by his extended family, the Riches of Glen Head.

He finally succumbed to complications associated with his battle with Alzheimer’s disease for the past several years.
