Coming off of a superb high school season, Matthew Sloan, sophomore captain and three year starter on the varsity soccer team, has been selected for the second year in a row to travel to Europe to represent Region One ODP soccer.
During the high school season Sloan earned all-state, all-county and defensive player of the conference honors. This year’s trip is to Barcelona, Spain to train and then compete in the Mediterranean International Cup (MIC), a high-level tournament that will include some of the best teams in Europe such as Barcelona, Real Madrid, Liverpool and more.
The Region One team is comprised of 17 top players from along the east coast who were selected to the team through a series of tryouts after first representing their state in the regional tournament last summer. This selection process included a summer camp at Rider University, a trip to Bradenton, FL in December to compete in the inter-regional tournament against the other three regions and then finally a final selection winter camp held at Penn State University in early January.
Sloan is an honor student and involved in many extracurricular activities such as Jazz Band and the theater production of Grease. He is also treasurer of the class of 2017. Sloan will leave for Barcelona on March 29 and return April 7.
