Ash Wednesday
The Farmingdale United Methodist Church, 407 Main St., will distribute ashes on Wednesday at noon. That evening at 7:30 p.m., seven area Methodist Churches will offer a combined service for community residents at Grace United Methodist Church, 5215 South Wellwood Ave., Lindenhurst, and all are welcome. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the season of Lent, a time when many Christians prepare for Easter by observing a period of fasting, repentance, abstinence and spiritual discipline. During Ash Wednesday services, the minister will lightly rub the sign of the cross with ashes onto the foreheads of worshipers.

The Women’s Club will host a meeting at Farmingdale Village from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Saturday, Feb. 21
Over the Hill Gang
The Over the Hill Gang Softball league is holding registrations for its upcoming season from 9 a.m. to noon. Registration will be held at Allen Park, 45 Motor Ave., Farmingdale.
The competitive league is open to men at least 40 years old who live in the Town of Oyster Bay or Farmingdale. For details, visit www.othgny.com. All applicants will be required to show proof of age and residency before entering the league draft.

Runner’s Edge Race
Greater Long Island Race Club fun run begins at 9 a.m. and ends at 11 a.m. It starts and finishes at The Runner’s Edge, 242 Main St., Farmingdale. Complimentary post-run refreshment will be served. There is no fee.
Monday, Feb. 23
School Resumes
Students of the Farmingdale School district will return to class on Monday. The Parent Teacher Association council meeting begins at 7 p.m. at Howitt Middle School.

Business Breakfast Series
The Melville Chamber of Commerce is hosting a Business Breakfast Series at Courtyard and TownePlace Suites by Marriott Republic Airport, 2 Marriott Plaza, Farmingdale, from 8 to 10 a.m. Learn how to create a perfect elevator speech in 30 minutes with special guest Dan Richie, regional director of Performance Consulting.

Open Swim Night
Farmingdale High School is hosting an open swim for students from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.
Taste of Farmingdale
The Village of Farmingdale is set for its annual Farmingdale Village Winter Wonderland Expo Taste of Farmingdale open house, to be held at Village Hall at 361 Main Street from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. A Taste of Farmingdale will feature village restaurants with tasting and mini massages along with a great variety of merchants. The Farmingdale Chamber of Commerce is joining in, they will have a shared table for Chamber members with samples and giveaways. Some participating restaurants include: Caracara Mexican Grill, Nutty Irishman, Hush Bistro, Frankie’s East Side, Croxley’s, Three Brothers Pizza, Library Café, Cascarino’s, Stuff-a-Bagel and Village Kitchen. Additionally, some participating businesses include The Chocolate Duck, A Taste of Long Island, The Divine Olive, Paint and Main, Farmingdale Music Center, Althea’s Boutique, Le Che Salon, Priestley Chiropractic, Farmingdale Wellness and more. The expo is free and open to everyone.
Jed Myers Poetry Reading
Seattle poet Jed Myers will read from his collected works at Farmingdale State College, 2350 Broadhollow Rd., Farmingdale, at 11 a.m. The reading—the kick-off event in the spring Visiting Writers Program—will be held in the Great Room in Ward Hall. Meyers, also a practicing psychiatrist, studied creative writing at Tufts University. He wrote poetry for years, but did not seek to publish his work until after the September 11, 2001 attack on the World Trade Center. He was a 2013 runner-up for Farmingdale’s Paumanok Award. The reading is free and open to all.
