On March 19 at Adelphi University in Garden City 178 original “Creative Cups” works of art will be auctioned to benefit the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Program, including Marilyn Bird’s contribution, “Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend.” The ordinary bras that have been turned into folk art.
Bird, of Floral Park, pays homage to Marilyn Monroe and in honor of her grandmother who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008.
“Both my grandmother and I love Marilyn Monroe, and I wanted to incorporate something we both share together,” said Bird. “I feel it is extremely important for events like this that bring attention to this notable cause.”
Bird and her family are grateful every day that her grandmother overcame cancer and has been in remission six years.
“I want to give back to those in need, since we are so fortunate to have my grandmother alive and healthy,” Bird added.
The inspirations for the Creative Cups are many. Artist Richard Vaux of Lloyd Neck evoked autumn with his design “Wishful Landscape II.” Girl Scouts from Troop 3648 in Farmingdale made “Girl Scout Cookies” to honor the memory of Girl Scout Founder Juliet Gordon Lowe, who died from breast cancer. Breast cancer survivor Joan Leondis of Garden City used many jewels for her “Life is Precious.” The amazing “Bra-alicious” by Dave Jones of East Meadow is made of welded spoons and chains.
These and 173 other Creative Cups will be auctioned on Thursday, March 19, at 6 pm at Adelphi University’s University Center in Garden City. NBC’s Pat Battle, a breast cancer survivor herself, again will host the event.
To date, chief sponsors are Leviton Foundation, Long Island Plastic Surgical Group and Lackmann Culinary Services.
