The Mineola Mustang wrestlers placed 13 out of 19 wrestlers in the recent Nassau County Championships.  Seniors James Gerstner (160 lbs), James Rodriguez (170 lbs) Anthony Sarno (182 lbs) and Luigi Athan (285 lbs) all were qualifying Champions.

Senior John Clancy (152 lbs) and junior Mike Bowen (195 lbs) along with freshmen Ryan Sullivan (106 lbs), Jisoo Kim (120lbs), Mike Cueter (138 lbs) and Sebastion Domench (145 lbs) all took third place. Senior Ronn Mathew and freshmen Henry Fuentes ( 126 lbs) and Paul Hincapie (132 lbs) nabbed fourth place.

Just missing the top four while still having a solid year, freshmen Kevin Dunleavy (113 lbs), Leon Shalumof (126 lbs), Edwin Acevado (132 lbs) and sophomore Kevin Small (138 lbs).

The Mineola team had a successful year despite the fact that many of the team members were underclassmen, having won five matches and lost 11. The biggest challenge for the team this year was having three of the team’s top senior wrestlers miss the year due to injury.

Seniors Peter McCormack and Edien Hincapie were both returning county champions and Dunleavy took fourth place last year. As individuals, each had the ability to become All-New York State wrestlers if not for their injuries. They were sorely missed as many of the teams losses were very close.
