The Roslyn Bulldogs traveled a long way in the 2014-15 basketball season. They regrouped from last year to post winning records in both Conference A-III and overall play. Seeded number 11 in Conference A playoff action, the Bulldogs won a string of improbable victories to make it to semifinal action. However, a great season came to an end last Saturday night as Roslyn fell, 47-42 to Valley Stream South.
Playing against a bigger and more physical team, Roslyn stayed in the game early, building up a 17-14 second quarter lead. But the Bulldog offense ran into a cold streak. Valley Stream led at halftime, and then extended the lead to 28-20 in the third quarter.
Roslyn has played from behind all throughout their playoff run and they battled back again, using a full-court press and a three-point shot by Noah Nardone to cut the margin to 31-26, before two free throws by Valley Stream gave them a 33-26 lead at the end of the third quarter. In the final frame, the action was fast and furious as elimination.

In the end, Valley Stream’s size proved too much for Roslyn’s all-out play on both ends of the court. Valley Stream was paced by center Hall Elisias, who scored 22 points and grabbed 20 rebounds, many of them on the offensive glass. And so, a great playoff run, highlighted by come-from-behind victories on the road over higher-ranked teams, Friends Academy and Roosevelt High School, came to an end.
For the season, Roslyn finished with a 13-6 record. For the final game, Augustine had 19 points and Nardone, wrapping up a great varsity career at Roslyn, had 10 points.
This summer, local residents will see Roslyn youngsters playing pickup games all over the villages, getting ready for next fall’s season and the opportunity to bring more glory to Roslyn’s basketball program.
