With the dynamic speech before the US Congress by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu still being talked about, U.S.-Israeli relationships remain in the news.
To shed light on the subject and with a wealth of background information, Warren Bass, The Wall Street Journal’s senior editor of the review section, will be coming to Temple Sinai of Roslyn for a talk centering on the evolution of this key alliance.
On Tuesday, March 24 at 7:30 p.m., Bass will both discuss and give fascinating background the U.S.-Israel relationship, including questions as: How did the United States develop a strong relationship with Israel since the Jewish state’s birth in 1948? And what is the future of that relationship? Bass will review the relations that U.S. Presidents have established with Israel. But mostly, he will explore the pivotal presidency of John F. Kennedy, one that helped create the U.S.-Israel Alliance and the modern Middle East.
Bass is an author of a book on the subject, Support Any Friend: Kennedy’s Middle East and the Making of the U.S.-Israel Alliance (Oxford University Press, 2004).
The book examines how Israel persuaded the administration of John F. Kennedy to start arming the Jewish state. Upon publication, it received strong reviews in the national media.
• “Riveting…. A major contribution to the diplomatic history of a little understood period in American Middle East diplomacy.” The New York Times.
• “Stimulating and informative…. Based on deep research, well-weighed and analyzed…an important addition to our knowledge of a fraught subject.” The Washington Post Book World.
• “A generous introduction to the issues and events in lively prose, judiciously leavened with wryly humorous anecdotes…. An engaging book, thoroughly researched and lucidly argued, on a seminal moment in the making of one of America’s most consequential alliances.” The San Francisco Chronicle.
• “Surely the definitive account of John F. Kennedy’s Israel policy.” The Washington Monthly.
Before coming to The Journal, Bass had stints with the federal government, The Washington Post, the RAND Corporation, the 9/11 Commission and the Council on Foreign Relations.
A question-and-answer period will take place after the talk, which will be followed by a book signing. Books will be available for purchase. The event is free and open to the entire community.
