Editorial: Spring Has Finally Sprung?

Even though winter seems to be putting up quite the fight to keep spring from establishing a foothold, that doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of activities, outdoor and otherwise, looming on the horizon for Garden City residents. Opening day for the Garden City Little League is in a couple of short weeks and is the opening salvo for the season. Runners will undoubtedly be carb loading for the 5K run/walk on Saturday, April 25 that the Garden City Teachers’ Association (GCTA) will be holding at Garden City High School, labeled “GC For a Cure,” with proceeds going to benefit Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.

And if indoor activities are more your speed, the Garden City Bird Sanctuary will be holding a 20th Anniversary benefit performance on Friday, May 8 at the Garden City Casino called “Mark Twain—Alive Again in Garden City” with the Bird Sanctuary’s fearless leader Rob Alvey playing the late Samuel Clemens. And this doesn’t even take into account Garden City’s premiere social event, the May 8 Pineapple Ball that will be held at the Garden City Hotel or the annual Garden City Belmont Festival held in June where residents and visitors alike line Seventh Street to eat, drink and be merry in conjunction with the nearby Belmont Stakes.
