Local Robotics Teams Are Champs

Two Floral Park robotics teams came home with trophies from the FIRST LEGO League Long Island Championship Tournament held at Longwood High School on Sunday, March 1. The tournament, which began with 122 Nassau and Suffolk county teams earlier this year, was sponsored by School-Business Partnerships of LI, Inc. (SBPLI).

The R.I.G.s team won the Presentation Award for effectively communicating the problems that children with allergies face and the team’s innovative solution: a computer app that heightens student understanding of the dangers of allergies that affect many of their classmates and friends.

The Brick Heads won the Alliance Award for their successful collaboration with the Plainview Thunder Hawks team. The teams cooperatively ran both of their robots and achieved the highest combined robot game score.

The Brick Heads also won the second place Champion’s Award and achieving excellence in teamwork/core Values, the Robot Game, and the research project. The Brick Heads’ project is an original, one-minute YouTube video entitled “Be A Friend!” that creatively uses LEGOs to show how teens can help and support those with autism. Readers are invited to view the Brick Head’s video presentation of their project on their channel, brickheadstv, on www.youtube.com.

Next stop for the Floral Park Brick Heads will be the FIRST LEGO League’s Razorback Invitational Championship Tournament at the University of Arkansas, where they will be competing with 63 international teams in mid-May.

Cheers to the R.I.G.s and Brick Heads, Floral Park’s winning robotics teams.
