Gloria Su is running for the Manhasset Public Library Board of Trustees open position. Here is a bit of background she has provided the Manhasset Press on her background. Come and hear her speak on March 31 at 7:30 p.m. at the candidate forum at Manhasset Public Library at 30 Onderdonk Ave. in Manhasset.
Gloria Su and her family (husband George, children Caroline, William, and Andrew Juang) have been residents of Manhasset since 2003. All three of her children have attended the elementary, middle and high schools in the Manhasset School District. Su and her family use the library frequently and have been staunch supporters of numerous library programs. From borrowing books and materials, participating in exercise programs and organizing community exhibits, to using the library for college admission interviews, Su and her family are power users of the library. They appreciate the central location and easy availability of library services. In addition, Su has been an avid participant in the community. She has served on the Shared Decision Making Team for Shelter Rock Elementary School from 2005-07, the Citizens’ Advisory Committee for Finance from 2007-08, the Board of the Chinese American Association of North Hempstead from 2009-present and the SCA Education Committee from 2014-present.
Su graduated from Cardozo High School in Bayside. She received her BA from Northwestern University and her PhD in immunology from the University of Chicago and postdoctoral training at The Johns Hopkins University. She stayed on faculty at The Johns Hopkins University as an Assistant Professor until she moved to Manhasset. She is currently an associate professor at Columbia University Medical Center in Manhattan, focusing on translational research in pancreatic cancer along with head and neck malignancies. Through her professional career, she is familiar with and extensively uses academic library systems, interfacing both digitally and physically with Columbia’s library for her daily research. She will bring this vast knowledge to the board and contribute to the continued modernization of Manhasset Library.
As director of her multimillion dollar research program, she provides vision and research direction, oversees finances and budget and manages staff. Working in a nonprofit capacity professionally has led to her successful track record of building and developing programs while under the restrictions of a defined budget and limited resources during challenging times. In addition, as someone who has been actively involved in the Manhasset community for the past decade, she is knowledgeable about how to work effectively to create consensus through understanding and enveloping differing opinions from numerous community organizations. These qualifications should serve her well as a trustee.
Su has seen the Manhasset Public Library grow from a small, one story building to the major center at the heart of our community under the auspices of the excellent leadership currently in place at the library. She hopes to see it continue to grow in its role as a library at the cutting edge of this internet age and flourish as the philosophical center of Manhasset. Su understands that the library serves a diverse population throughout our community of differing needs. She will work to facilitate the continued transformation of our beautiful library system into the
21st century.
