Several local women were recognized recently at the Hicksville Chamber of Commerce’s Women’s History Month Reception at TD Bank.
The annual event honors women for their work in the community, as well as involvement in the Chamber of Commerce. Among the honorees were Hicksville residents Miriam Chocron and Donna Rivera-Downey.
Chochron’s Hicksville-based law firm focuses on immigration law and as a fairly new business owner, she was grateful for the recognition.
“It’s a very nice feeling,” she said. “I think it’s a great honor to be recognized in the community.”
Chochron was born in Venezuela and graduated in law from the University of Nice, France before obtaining a Master’s Degree in International Law from the University of Toulouse, France. She completed her legal studies at Hofstra University School of Law.
She says she likes the Hicksville community because of its convenience and diversity.
Rivera-Downey is the Chief Marketing and Communications Officer at Girl Scout of Nassau County. She is also actively involved in the local community, serving on the board of the Hicksville-Jericho Rotary Club, as president of the Hicksville Public Library board of trustees and with a local church.
“I’m very honored. I think the Hicksville chamber and TD banks are two great organizations in Hicksville and to be asked to represent the community is a big honor,” she said. “There are so many great women in our community and it’s great they recognize us. And I’m just lucky to be involved in the community.”
Miriam Martinez, a Levittown resident who owns Margaritas Café in Hicksville, was also honored at the event.
“I feel really good because I’m so proud all the hard work I’ve been doing all this time has paid off,” she said. “We like the community in Hicksville, it’s very nice they welcome every small business that comes here.”
