Alexander Ara Dadourian of Port Washington, NY passed away on March 2, 2015. He was 81.
Alex was born on April 14, 1933 in Brooklyn to Elise and Dadour Dadourian. He grew up in Forest Hills Queens with his three brothers Haig, Tom and Peter. In 1961 he married Virginia Demirjian of Providence R.I. and in 1966, they moved to Manhasset where together they raised their 5 children, Lynn, Stephen, Gregory, Elise and Alexandra.
Alex was a graduate of Blair Academy and went on to earn a degree from NYU Stern School of Business. After spending 2 years in the army he worked with his father in the manufacturing business and later became involved in real estate in New York City where, together with his brother Haig, led the development of his family’s property in downtown Manhattan.
Alex was also deeply involved in the Armenian church including St. Vartan Armenian Cathedral in New York City as well as Holy Martyrs Church in Bayside where he was a major force behind bringing the church into the modern era. He worked closely with the founders of the Gulbenkian Maternity Hospital in Aleppo Syria to establish quality healthcare for women in that area and also helped to refurbish 27 schools in and around impoverished areas of Armenia.
Alex led a full life. Some of his hobbies included sailing and playing golf, but most important to him was the time he spent with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife Virginia “Ginny”, his five children, their spouses, his 15 grandchildren and his brother Peter. He is predeceased by his brothers Haig and Thomas. The family received visitors on March 6 at Fairchild and Sons Funeral Home and a funeral mass was held on March 7 at Holy Martyrs Church. He was interred in Nassau Knolls Cemetery.
