Chaminade High School’s Tarmac was named Best High School Newspaper at the New York Press Association’s Better Newspaper Contest at the Gideon Putnam Resort in Saratoga Springs on March 27.
“Great paper,” the judges said. “We really enjoyed how this school’s paper incorporated students’ illustrations and photography into the articles to keep your attention. Love the awesome archive graphic for the 1934 edition in the 80 year celebration piece. Stories are strongly and well written, and the topics and coverage incorporate many school issues.”
Editors-in-Chief Andrew Bandini and Guy J. LaCognata, Senior News Editor Julian Mancini, and Senior Sports Editor Darius Iraj were on hand to receive the awards.
“The different breakout sessions were a great opportunity for us young journalists to explore the different realms of journalism and publication,” said LaCognata on the school’s website.
Tarmac gained 115 points for Best News Story, Best Column, General Excellence and Overall Design Excellence. The catholic newspaper also nabbed second place and honorable mention accolades for Best Feature Story, third place and honorable mention for Best News Story, third place for Best Sports Story, honorable mention for Photography and all three awards for Best Column.
“I am really happy that I was awarded for my diligence,” said Bandini. “I’m even happier that I was given the opportunity to learn how to improve Tarmac even more for next year’s statewide competition.”
