Obituary: Ingeborg Biel

Ingeborg Biel, a beloved member of the Garden City, Stewart Manor and Floral Park communities, passed away peacefully after a short illness on Wednesday, April 1, surrounded by her beloved sons George and Frank. Inge was a resident of Cherry Valley for 15 years, an active member of the Garden City Ladies Auxiliary American Legion, The Herricks Senior Center, and St. James Church in Stewart Manor. An entrepreneur at age 60, she was the owner of Inge’s Yarn Emporium on Covert Avenue in Floral Park for 23 years. A talented knitter and crocheter, she shared with countless members of the community her gifts and talents. She was a member of the Covert Avenue Merchants Association  and she contributed  to the Winthrop University Hospital Perinatal Bereavement Program, where she and her costumes knitted blankets for newborns who died at birth. She taught vacation bible and made snacks for the children at St. James Lutheran Church.

Known for her charming German accent, warm smile and good heart, she was a native of Frankfurt, Germany, she fell in love with a US Army CIC officer Fred Biel, who she  married. They were devoted to each other for 62 years. She was an international journalist with hundreds of bylines and interviewed many famous celebrities including Bing Crosby. She was the first women Cub Scout den leader in Queens. She was a very active member of the Republican Political Party and well known in her hometown of Jamaica, Queens.
Ingeborg had six grandchildren—Scott, Brad, Ashling, Kaitlin, Aidan, Shannon and her newborn great-grandchild Sasha June. Her wake was held on Monday, April 6 at Fairchild Funeral Home located at 1201 Franklin Ave. in Garden City. The funeral service was held on Tuesday, April 7, at St. James Lutheran Church in Stewart Manor. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations in her honor to the Veteran Affairs Medical Center located at 79 Middleville Road, Northport, NY 11768 and be put to the attention of Voluntary Service 135.
