Shelter Island Pilot Injured in Plane Crash

An 80-year-old pilot was critically wounded when the single-engine plane was flying crash landed shortly after takeoff at a small airstrip in his hometown of Shelter Island on Monday evening.

Shelter Island Town Police said Michael Russo was flying his Cessna 162 out of Klenawicus Airfield, when the plane went down at about 6:30 p.m.

The pilot was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he is listed in critical but stable condition.

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the incident.
