Fifteen-year-old Mineola resident Cameron Duic wanted to do something to assist his fellow neighbors. The Boy Scout, who is working towards his Eagle Scout badge, had the idea to provide a quick and easy way for first responders to access medical information of patients in emergency situations. So he reached out to his medical neighbor, Winthrop-University Hospital, to see how it might be possible.

Upon meeting with Village of Mineola trustee Paul Cusato and Winthrop’s Director of External Affair, Justin Burke, Duic gained the hospital’s support to make this vital resource—called “File of Life”—available to every Mineola resident.

Over the course of the next several weeks, Duic will be joining with his fellow boy scouts to deliver thousands of File of Life folders to the mailboxes of Mineola residents. Once completed by the recipient, the magnetic File of Life packet can easily hang in a prominent place in the home such as on the refrigerator.

“What Mr. Duic is doing for the Mineola community is terrific and Winthrop-University Hospital is pleased to partner with him to support this project,” said John F. Collins, Winthrop’s president and CEO. “Medical emergencies can happen at a moment’s notice and now, residents will have a tool to keep all of their vital medical and emergency contact information in one place and save emergency workers precious seconds when they’re needed most.”
