Art Infiltrates WWII

The Plainview library welcomes attendees to learn about how art was expressed in WWII at 2 p.m. During World War II, nothing could light up the face of a military man more than the sight of a beautiful girl from back home. Pin-up art became a significant and rich part of 20th century culture, and essential to the war effort. This illustrated lecture, presented by Louise Cella Caruso, will bring light to the pretty girls reminiscent of the sweethearts the soldiers left behind—images that adorned aircraft and carried American popular culture onto foreign shores.

Movie: Birdman

The Bethpage library presents two showings, 2 and 7:30 p.m. of the Academy Award-winning film Birdman. In this dark comedy, Riggan Thomson, a faded Hollywood actor famous for his superhero roles struggles to mount a Broadway adaptation of a Raymond Carver story in the hope that by spearheading an ambitious new Broadway play he will, among other things, revive his moribund career. In many ways this is a foolhardy move, but the former movie superhero has high hopes that this creative gambit will legitimize him as an artist and prove that he is not just a Hollywood has-been. As he preps for the stage debut he has many possible disasters to deal with. The film was nominated for seven Golden Globe Awards and Keaton won Best Actor. Starring Michael Keaton, Zach Galiflanakis, Naomi Watts and Emma Stone. Rated R. 119 minutes.

Yearning For Poetry

The Bethpage library presents “Yearning For Poetry: How Abraham Lincoln & Walt Whitman Influenced One Another’s Writings,” present by Anne Starnes Kingsbury, poet and educator at The Walt Whitman Birthplace Association, from 2 to 4 p.m. Abraham Lincoln, statesman, and Walt Whitman, poet, were two of the most interesting and different figures of their era. Yet, these two became admirers of each other and their literary work. Many people can think back to their English literature classes, and recall the moving elegy to Lincoln, Oh Captain! My Captain, penned by Whitman after Lincoln’s death. This lecture will examine the nature of their writings before and after the other’s influence, including Lincoln’s poetry and Whitman’s essays. Interesting anecdotal accounts will be included, and examples of speeches and poems will be read. This free event promises to be an enlightening literary afternoon for all.
