Editorial: When Mark Twain Comes To Town

One of the crown jewels of the Village of Garden City is the Garden City Bird Sanctuary/Tanners Pond Road Environmental Center. This year marks its 20th anniversary of operation and among the many events that are being held in conjunction with recognizing this fact is an appearance by late famous American writer and humorist Mark Twain (as channeled by Bird Sanctuary founder Rob Alvey). Twain will be appearing on Friday, May 8 at the Garden City Casino during which time he’ll be opining about numerous topics—religion, political differences—that are as relevant and topical today as they were when the man born Samuel Clemens was walking the Earth. A noted speaker in his day, Twain’s latter-day resurrection in Garden City promises to be an entertaining evening chock full of anecdotes and observations that will also serve to raise money as a means of expanding the role of this 9-acre sanctuary that doubles as an oasis of environmental tranquility is the heart of suburbia.
