On the cool evening of May 4, family, friends and residents of Massapequa/Plainedge gathered together on the football field to honor Brian Moore.
The 25-year-old NYPD officer passed away that afternoon, after sustaining a gunshot to the head on May 2 in Queens.
Moore and his partner, Erik Jansen, 30, were driving alongside the shooter Demetrius Blackwell, 35 (now facing first-degree murder charges), when he removed a gun and fired several shots at Moore and Jansen, who were still inside the vehicle. Moore was immediately taken to Jamaica Hospital for surgery, but did not make it.
A five-year decorated officer, Moore was a graduate of Plainedge High School. A mere few hours after his passing, Moore’s alma mater held a vigil on the football field, reaching a turnout of hundreds of people who came to pay their respects for the slain officer.
A wake will be held for Moore on Thursday from 2-4:30 p.m. and 7-9:30 p.m. at the Chapey & Sons Funeral Home located at 20 Hicksville Road in Bethpage. A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at St. James Roman Catholic Church located at 80 Hicksville Road in Seaford. The burial will take place at Saint Charles Cemetery in Farmingdale.
The Massapequa Observer and staff at Anton Media Group would like to extend our deepest sympathies to Moore’s family and friends, as well as our sincerest and heartfelt gratitude to the NYPD, NYFD and NCPD, as well as the service men and women who protect us everyday.
