The Joan and Walter Hobbs Art Gallery at the Mineola Memorial Library recently featured a student exhibit titled “Local Colors: Long Island Lighthouses.”
The show is a compilation of artwork from the many talented students who attend the Garden Art Studio in Mineola. Celebrating their 21st year, The Garden Art Studio, founded by Mineola artist Lisa Fazio strives to foster creativity, build skills and confidence.
The exhibit celebrates Long Island’s heritage and the many lighthouses that grace the island. Also featured are custom-made hand painted surfboards created in mixed media. Surfboards are whimsically displayed to reflect the nautical theme. Fazio has also installed her own work depicting Clark Gardens. The watercolor and pen and ink art celebrates the natural beauty of the gardens.
The display case features Fazio’s “traveling sketchbook” and work created in Alaska, Arizona, Mexico and Maine. Fazio is a firm believer of always carrying a sketchbook to capture the beauty of different locales.
“I emphasize the importance of daily sketching to all my students,” said Fazio. “An artist has to learn to observe the world and then interpret it. All of my students know art is hard work but the excitement of creating something new and original keeps them motivated.”
