Close to 200 riders participated in the fourth Annual Lauri Strauss Leukemia Foundation Ride on Sunday, 17, for either a 3.3, 14 or 21 mile bike tour. The event raised over $30,000, with donations still coming in. The majority of the funds will be disbursed towards research to help find cause and cure for leukemia and related cancers.
The morning started with yoga stretches and ended with massages. Riders enjoyed a continental breakfast provided by local bakeries and stores. The Port Washington Police District and Fire Department helped oversee the safety of the riders along the designated route.
Evelyn and Julie Strauss, along with Ralph Intintoli, owner of Port Washington Bicycles and the day’s announcer, wished the riders off with a few words about the Lauri Strauss Leukemia Foundation as well as bicycle safety while on the streets. Evelyn Strauss said of the event, “We are thrilled and so grateful at the outpouring of support from our major sponsor, The Peter and Jeri Dejana Family Foundation, along with so many other participants. The ride has grown over these past four years and we look forward to our 5th event next year.”
The Lauri Strauss Leukemia Ride for Research is not a race, yet there are winners. This year, the prize for top fundraising team went to Port Jewish Center and Cheryl Littman.
