In an effort to fund research for pediatric brain cancer, the second annual Going Nuts ‘Til We Find A Cure fundraiser will be held at Sportime Bethpage Multisport, 4105 Hempstead Tpke., Sunday, May 31 from 1 to 4 p.m.

The fundraiser is held in loving memory of 8-year-old Giuliana Boudouvas of Syosset, who died suddenly in 2013 from a rare and aggressive form of brain cancer.

Giuliana’s family and friends established “Team Peanut” to help fund pediatric brain tumor research. All registrations from the May 31 event will go to “Voices Against Brain Cancer,” an organization whose mission is to find a cure for brain cancer by advancing scientific research, increasing awareness within the medical community and supporting patients, their families and caregivers afflicted with this devastating disease. All donations will go toward a scholarship fund created in memory of Giuliana.

Funds raised for “Voices Against Brain Cancer” support lifesaving research and educational programs right here on Long Island, including a cryogenic freezer at Long Island Brain Tumor Center to store personalized vaccines for subjects that have enrolled in a phase III study, Dr. John Boockvar, MD of The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research’s study which assesses the affect of specific medicines on glioma stem-like cells from patients with glioblastoma multiform and more.

Brain and central nervous system (CNS) tumors are the most common cancers among children ages 0-19 and one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths in children, both male and female, under the age of 20 in the U.S. Primary malignant and non-malignant brain and CNS tumors in the US have an incidence rate of 5.42 cases per 100,000 children between the ages of 0-19 years old. A total of 22,535 children are estimated to have brain and CNS tumors and 4,620 new cases are expected to be diagnosed in the U.S. in 2015.
