As part of the Enrichment Program at Robbins Lane School in Syosset, fourth and fifth graders were invited to attend a most interesting “Lunch Bunch” program.
The grandfather of students Molly and Jesse Lebolt, Fred Gross, volunteered to share the story of his parents’ travails before, during and after World War II in Eastern Europe. Gross, who is a docent at the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County in Glen Cove, has spent a great deal of time recording his parents’ stories and verifying them with documents he has researched. He was interested in sharing this process with the students.
There were approximately 40 students in attendance and for 30 minutes they were completely focused on the piece of history that was being shared. These students were quite interested in how Gross came upon all the documents and pictures he brought with him. Although the bell rang for lunch, the students remained in order to have their questions answered and to hear more of the story.
The school is especially grateful to Gross for taking the time to enlighten its children about the past and to inspire them to learn more about their own families.
