It was a great day for Hicksville’s Memorial Day Parade as a multitude of local groups and associations participated in the May 25 event. Starting in the Sears parking lot, the procession wound its way up 107 past Old Country Road to the Hicksville Middle School Memorial Garden. The high school and middle school bands performed “America the Beautiful” followed by the Benediction, Placing of Wreaths and the Firing Squad Salute, which was done by the American Legion-Charles Wagner Post #421.
Parade marchers included members of the American Legion Post, British War Veterans of America, Catholic War Veterans, Knights of Columbus Holy Family and the Hicksville Chamber of Commerce. The local schools were well represented with members of the Dutch Lane Elementary School Kick Line Team and East Street School Eaglettes proudly showing off their colors.
Gregory Faling, Commander of the American Legion-Charles Wagner Post #421, said he was glad to see the large turnout.
“An invitation was mailed to all the churches, schools, dancing, twirling and all the Boy and Girl Scout organizations in the Hicksville community,” said Faling. “We received a very good response from many of the associations and organizations in the community.”
The ceremony ended in the Memorial Garden with the playing of TAPS and “God Bless America” by the high school and middle school bands. The closing prayer was said by Reverend James Stachacz of St. Ignatius Church.
