Observing The Earth From Space
The Bethpage library hosts David S. Paris, retired engineer of aeronautics and astronautics, as he presents a fascinating free program from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Since 1960, people have benefited from the information obtained from thousands of downward-looking satellites launched into Earth’s orbit. Many improve our lives and our economy by providing information about weather, climate, water resources, deforestation, floods, tsunamis, forest fires, landslides, volcanoes and the atmosphere in general. This talk will take attendees through the world of satellites that are providing citizens with information that could not be obtained in any other way. This will be a fun, scientific and educational night not to be missed.
Free Speech And The Constitution
Join the Plainview library and James L. Coll at 2 p.m. for this enlightening program. Despite the absolute right of free speech in America, the government routinely makes laws preventing people from speaking or expressing themselves without recourse. Adjunct history professor and NYPD Detective James L. Coll discusses circumstances and landmark Supreme Court decisions to help analyze the challenge of balancing free speech with public safety.

Conversations With Music
The Bethpage library hosts Dr. James Kolb, professor of drama at Hofstra University, for a discussion on Luciano Pavarotti, King of the High C’s, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Probably the most popular tenor since Caruso, Luciano Pavarotti (1935-2007) combined accuracy of pitch and quality of sound production with a natural musicality. He was one of the dominant and most popular tenors in the world from his debut in the 1960s well into the 1990s and even later. He achieved true stardom at the Met in 1972 in Donizetti’s La Fille Du Regiment—when he drove the crowd to a frenzy with nine seemingly effortless high C’s in the signature aria “Pour Mon Amie.” (He received a record 17 curtain calls.) In 1990, Pavarotti joined forces with Jose Carreras and Placido Domingo to form the fabulously popular The Three Tenors. View glittering debuts and performances at world-famous opera houses and enjoy the highlights of this amazing career in audio and video excerpts.

Movie: Selma
The Plainview library presents two showings, 2:30 and 7 p.m., of the hard-hitting drama, Selma. This unforgettable true story chronicles a tumultuous three-month period in 1965, when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (David Oyelowo) led a dangerous campaign to secure equal voting rights in the face of violent opposition. The epic march from Selma to Montgomery culminated in the signing of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, one of the most significant victories for the civil rights movement. Carmen Ejogo and Oprah Winfrey are also featured. 2 hours 8 minutes. Rated PG-13.

Art In The Afternoon
The Bethpage library hosts Thomas Germano, professor of art history at Farmingdale State College, for a lecture of the “Fabulous Art of the Aztecs” from 2 to 3:30 p.m. in the auditorium. Through Aztec and Spanish records, we know much about this last pre-Columbian civilization. See once brightly-colored images of their gods and kings in ritual garb, warriors in splendid finery and fantastic animals. Learn about their stories carved in stone—myths and tales of heroic conquests and of horrific human sacrifices by the priests. Germano is uniquely qualified to present this lecture, as he participated in a National Endowment for the Humanities symposium in Oxaca, Mexico, where he studied Aztec civilization in detail. An exciting portrait of Aztec art from stone sculpture to feather designs and illustrated codices, all illustrated in colorful PowerPoint.
