Art In The Afternoon
The Bethpage library hosts Thomas Germano, professor of art history at Farmingdale State College, for a lecture of the “Fabulous Art of the Aztecs” from 2 to 3:30 p.m. in the auditorium. Through Aztec and Spanish records, we know much about this last pre-Columbian civilization. See once brightly-colored images of their gods and kings in ritual garb, warriors in splendid finery and fantastic animals. Learn about their stories carved in stone—myths and tales of heroic conquests and of horrific human sacrifices by the priests. Germano is uniquely qualified to present this lecture, as he participated in a National Endowment for the Humanities symposium in Oxaca, Mexico, where he studied Aztec civilization in detail. An exciting portrait of Aztec art from stone sculpture to feather designs and illustrated codices, all illustrated in colorful PowerPoint.

The Art Of Fooling
The Bethpage library hosts magician, author and educator Allan Zola Kronzek as he presents an entertaining evening of mystery, history and trickery devoted to the world’s second oldest profession—conjuring. Learn why medieval magicians were feared as sorcerers. Discover why a treatise on witch persecution was the first book to explain magic tricks. Experience magic as it was performed in the markets of ancient Greece and Rome, an 18th century English fair, and on the modern stage. Come one, come all, for a magical, eye-opening evening not to be missed. The Art of Fooling performance runs from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. and is free. It is appropriate for young adults, adults and seniors.
