Editorial: Summer’s First Great Festivity

It’s old news at this point that American Pharoah became the first Triple Crown winner in 37 years. But one constant that’s been going on for the past 18 years is the Village of Garden City’s successful hosting of its Annual Belmont Festival. This year’s festivities were no different as thousands once again filled Seventh Street to revel in the atmosphere that included a number of free activities including pony rides, a dunk tank and face painting. There was live music provided by Fivestone, New Vintage, Hungover Blues and Jerry & The Newcomers while the Best Wings contest yielded Garden City’s Prost Grill & Garten taking the honors for the second consecutive year. Another popular event, the children’s poster contest also wound up recognizing the following winners with a certificate and cash prize: Stratford School third-grader Elaine Wang, age 8 (Win); Stewart School fifth-grader Ashley Bremer, age 10 (Place); and Locust School first-grader Dylan Fisher, age 6 (Show). Their winning submissions will be on display at Garden City Village Hall through June 26. Congrats to the village for hosting another successful Belmont Festival.
