Annual Seventh Street promenade
has promising start
Garden City’s Friday Night Promenade summer series was kick-started last Friday, June 12, under a beautiful summer sunset. Diners and drinkers filled the outdoor seating areas in front of Leo’s Midway Bar and Grill and the Walk Street restaurant; children scampered around playing hide and seek and the Five Stone Band jammed all night.
The night foreshadowed what the Garden City Chamber of Commerce hopes will be a fun season of Friday Night Promenade this summer. For the next 14 weeks, excluding the Friday of July 4 weekend, Seventh Street will be buzzing with a wide-ranging set of themes and entertainment.
The night gives families a place to enjoy “Hospitality Garden City Style,” and brings the community together.
“The best thing to do is invite everyone, family and friends, out for a good time,” said John Wilton, chairperson of the Garden City Chamber of Commerce Merchant, Professional and Retailers Group. The group is a committee within the chamber that uses advertising and marketing to attract consumers to the Garden City business community.
Each week, the event will employ a different theme to keep things fresh. Some of those themes include Mardi Gras, Christmas in July, Cinco De Mayo and Disney fantasy, among many others. Tom McGerty, assistant director of the Garden City Pool, was on the street getting residents to sign up for the pool membership and said that the events can help local businesses.
“They have all of the themes, so hopefully that will get more people out here” McGerty said. “It’s just a really nice summer event.”
Balloons, face painting, music and other entertainment line the street for the kids and those who aren’t dining. The Five Stone Band will be the live music each week, playing a wide range of classic and new music.
