For the fourth year in a row, all of Schreiber’s varsity teams have been named Scholar Athlete Teams. The New York State Public High School Athletic Association sponsors the New York State Scholar Athlete program which recognizes academic scholarship among varsity sports. Any team with a cumulative 90% or higher grade point average qualifies as a NYS Scholar Athlete team. Once again, Schreiber has managed to accomplish this incredible honor. As a result, the school will be named a School of Distinction by the state, honoring schools in which all varsity squads earn scholar-athlete teams. Schreiber will be presented with this crowning achievement in September.

“This is a wonderful recognition for these teams that play at such a high level on the playing field and in the classroom,” said Stephanie Joannon, Athletic Director for the Port Washington school district. “Port Washington is a community that puts value on academics and athletics. We are a special community.”

Two high school teams managed to obtain the highest GPA among all the teams in the state – the softball and boys varsity lacrosse teams. Among 1,110 or more teams competing at the varsity level, these two teams earned this academic accolade during the spring season. Both teams were recognized for this impressive feat at the Town of North Hempstead meeting on June 23.

“This is very difficult to attain as there are upwards of 1,100 teams that compete in a particular sport,” said Joannon. “This is very big for us and the teams.”

Softball Coach Eric Sutz stressed proudly that there are two attributes to describe Port softball: grit and drive.

“I think success in the classroom while playing a varsity season shows a level of commitment and focus that translates well to the softball diamond,” said Sutz. “It speaks of the high character of the girls as people and I believe high-character people are more successful in all areas of life.”

All in all, it is a win-win for the school and the community as hard work does indeed pay off. It is a great way to end the school year after another successful season in both academics and athletics for Schreiber.

“From the parents to the coaches to the school leadership, we value the whole person so I am not surprised at these results,” said Joannon. “Hard work with effort gets these type of results.”

It’s been a year-round feat for both the coaching staff and student athletes at Schreiber High School. Between balancing time in the classroom and competing in games, every team fought tooth and nail to achieve their goals. All that hard work has paid off in many big ways.
