After reading the novel Out of My Mind by Sharon Draper, which tells the story of Melody, a young girl with cerebral palsy, Mineola Middle School students inspired to help bring awareness to that community. With the help of their teachers, Nicole DeStefano and Ilyse Milberg, the students participated in several fundraising activities throughout the year, including a teacher vs. student volleyball game, a 3-on-3 basketball tournament, and a lip-sync contest. These events raised over $1,200 for the United Cerebral Palsy (UCP) of Nassau County.
The students were able to meet some of the recipients of the money raised when four representatives of United Cerebral Palsy of Nassau County recently came to Mineola to meet the students, answer questions and received the check. Students will be participating in one final fundraiser on June 24, hoping to bring the total donation to over $1,500.
