Brookhaven Crash Leaves Woman Dead

A 46-year-old Hempstead woman was killed and several others were injured when a truck crashed into the van they were riding in, causing the van to roll over in Brookhaven on Tuesday night.

Suffolk County police said Nieves Rivera, 37, of Patchogue, was driving a van with eight passengers inside westbound on Montauk Highway when she was struck by an eastbound truck that swerved into her lane near Smith Road at 4:55 p.m.

The van then flipped over, killing Sandra Leon, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The drivers of the truck, van and its passengers were all taken to either Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue or Stony Brook University Hospital. They mostly had non-life threatening injuries, police said. A young boy was critically injured.

Fifth Squad detectives impounded the vehicles and are continuing the investigation.
