The Port Summer Show will be presenting Big Fish, a musical adventure based on the celebrated novel by Daniel Wallace and the acclaimed film written by John August (whose other credits include Charlie & The Chocolate Factory). Music and lyrics are by Andrew Lippa who also wrote The Addams Family.
Big Fish centers on Edward Bloom (played by Sameer Nanda), a traveling salesman who lives life to its fullest and then some! Edward’s larger than life stories thrill everyone around him, most of all his devoted wife Sandra (played by Tessa Peierls). But their son, Will (played by Wyn Stopford) is determined to find the truth behind his father’s epic tales.
“Every exaggeration,” said director Jason Summers, “every fanciful detail, every over-the-top nuance will come to startling musical life onstage through the talent of a cast of over 50 young performers. They will tell this epic tale through song and dance, and they will transport you.”
Since 1972, the focus of the Port Summer Show has been to provide a professional theatrical experience for incoming 7th graders through graduating seniors in a creative, fun environment that nurtures musical theater arts.
The end result is, more often than not, dazzling. “Every year, after each performance,” said Port Summer Show Co-President Jeanne Brennan, “we hear dozens of audience members say, ‘I forgot I was watching kids. I thought I was seeing an actual Broadway show.’”
Big Fish performance dates are Thursday, August 6 through Saturday, August 8 at 7:30 p.m.; and Sunday, August 9 at 2 p.m. in the air-conditioned Schreiber High School auditorium. Tickets are $10; kids under 12, $5. Senior citizens are admitted free for the performance on Thursday, August 6.
