The Port Washington Soccer Club BU-12 Cosmos won the LIJSL Long Island Cup 2002 Inter-A final on June 21 in a nail biting 5 – 4 penalty shoot out over the previously undefeated Lindenhurst Bianco Verde team. It was the Cosmos’ first appearance in the LI Cup finals, a single game elimination tournament held during the spring season. The Cosmos reached the finals by winning 4 games played throughout the spring 2015 season.
In the final match, the game ended scoreless in regulation time thanks to the strong play of the entire team and saves from Cosmos goalie Trevor Capps. The explosive Lindenhurst team was held scoreless thanks to stellar defensive work by Isaac Goldstein, Jonathan Klopp, Teddy Steinberg, and team captain Andrew Sichiani. Strong work in the midfield and attack was done by Shiv Chatrath, Jake Schupak, Josh Rosen, Sean Cassidy, and Maxx Donowitz. After an intense period of extra time, the game went into a penalty shootout, where the Cosmos players made all five of their penalty kicks with goals by Dylan Prengel, James Young, Jason Vinciguerra, Derek Lam, and Luke Vinciguerra. Despite the absence of Cosmos player Alex Chakrian due to injury, it was a great team win. The Cosmos ended their season on a high note.
In addition to the Cosmos reaching the LI Cup final, two other Port Washington Soccer Club teams reached the finals in their age groups.
