Hampton Street School principal Devra Small accepted a position with the North Shore School District on Thursday

Hampton Street School principal Devra Small was appointed as the director of elementary humanities in the North Shore School District, effectively ending her run in the Mineola School District, officials announced Thursday. The central office position in Sea Cliff runs for four years until Aug. 10, 2019.

“We’ll move quickly to find an interim replacement for her since it’s so late in the year to go out and recruit,” District Superintendent Michael Nagler said.

Small previously served as the prinicpal of the Cross Street School before it was closed and leased to the Solomon Schechter Day School of Nassau County. She was not immediately available for comment.

“As always, I encourage you to read with your child nearly every day and ensure that your child reads as well,” she said in her principal’s message to students on the school district website in June. “Please make reading an enjoyable part of your child’s summer routine, and engage your child in conversations about books and about your shared experiences during the summer.”

Nagler said Small would tender her resignation on Friday, Aug. 7 once her appointment was approved by the North Shore School Board. He commended Small for her service to Mineola.

“Devra has been a great principal for us,” Nagler said. “Like anyone in their career, they look to advance. She’s accepting a central office position which is a promotion for her in a very good school district. I think she’s going to do great things for North Shore as she did for Mineola.”

Mineola officials say they’ll have an interim building leader in place before school opens in September. The temporary principal would hold the position for the school year before Mineola begins its search for a permanent school head.

Nagler said the interim leader, who would be hired externally and he declined to name, would not be excluded from the interview process for the full-time spot in the summer of 2016.
