Local Runners Show ‘Heart & Sole’

Close to 500 runners and walkers were undeterred by the hot and humid conditions July 19, as they successfully completed the 12th annual Heart & Sole 5 Kilometer Run at the Plainview-Old Bethpage Middle School. The 5K was preceded by a fun run for the youngsters, with about 40 kids enjoying a jaunt through the field on the south side of the middle school campus.

The 5K participants traveled a 3.107-mile course that started on Radcliffe Road, headed north up to Amherst and Fordham roads and then down Central Park Road to Ruby Lane and back around to Southern Parkway and the finish line at the middle school.

Athletes from the local area were especially prominent in the list of award winners, led by 18-year-old Harry Prevor of Syosset, who scored in 13th place overall and second in the 16-19 age group with a time 0f 19 minutes, 5 seconds, as well as Shari Klarfeld of Plainview, who was the second woman overall to cross the finish line and first in the 30-34 age group in 19:25.

Dr. Karen Friedman of Plainview, an internal medecine specialist at North Shore-LIJ and assistant professor at Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine, took top honors among the women in the special category for physicians associated with either Plainview Hospital or Syosset Hospital. Her finishing time was 22:22.

Other award winners from the local area were Devyn Sparke of Plainview, third woman, 12-and-under age group; Tyler Sparke of Plainview, second, 12-and-under age group; Luke Fenney of Syosset, third, 12-and-under age group; Christian Schiavone of Plainview, first, 13-15 age group; Rebecca Simon of Jericho, second woman, 15-19 age group; Naomi Smolevitz of Woodbury, third woman, 25-29 age group; David Drebsky of Plainview, second, 30-34 age group; Aaron Billig of Plainview, second, 35-39 age group; Jen Temkin of Syosset, third woman, 40-44 age group; Judith Brenner of Plainview, second woman, 45-49 age group; Ann Dorman of Woodbury, first woman, 50-54 age group; Pamela Lee of Syosset, first woman, 60-64 age group; Constance Sehlmeyer of Syosset, second woman, 65-59 age group; Leonard Kaufman of Plainview, second, 65-69 age group; James Sweeney of Plainview, third, 65-69 age group; Bert Jablon of Syosset, first, 85-89 age group; Ira Salzman of Woodbury, second, physician; Charles Farber of Plainview, third physician; and Diana Cusa of Syosset, secnd, North Shore-LIJ emploee.

This year’s Heart & Sole 5K was held in honor of the dedicated nursing staffs at Plainview and Syosset hospitals.
