Oyster Bay pet sitters
hold first adoption event
Local dog walking company Two By Four hosted its first pet adoption event in Oyster Bay last week, an event that the family owned business termed a “kick-off” as it plans to hold many more such efforts to get dogs adopted.
“About 9,000 dogs are euthanized each year, and if we can save just one, it’s a start,” said Alexa Nardiello, director of sales and marketing. “Most are great dogs, but are just overlooked and we want to help them find their forever home.”
Two By Four, at 34 South St. in Oyster Bay, has been in the dog walking and pet sitting business for nine years. It began as a simple dog walking service by Nardiello’s mother, Melanie, who started the business out of the family home walking the neighbors’ dogs. Now, Nardiello said they have customers from Manhattan to Montauk, and wanted to do more to help rescue dogs find homes.
“It’s a true mom and pop business that just took off,” said Nardiello.
For the July 25 event, Two By Four teamed up with Carol Shulman from the Pet Adoption League of New York, Inc., who brought four rescue dogs from a foster home in Connecticut to be adopted. One of those four found a new home.
“All in all, for the first one, the turnout was awesome,” said Nardiello. “We had a lot of foot traffic and a lot of people learned about our shop.”
She said they also had dog trainer Donna Marie on hand offering tips to pet owners and Pet Value provided samples and coupons. She is already planning the next adoption event for Saturday, Oct. 3, from noon to 4 p.m. at the business.
“Next time, I’m hoping for more dogs and a wider variety of dogs, from older dogs to puppies,” said Nardiello. “We want to appeal to as many people as possible to find these dogs homes.”
