Kathryn Papa (Manhasset HS Class of 2008) will be performing the title role in Dell’ Arte Opera’s New York production of Hiram Titus’s opera, Rosina. Although the opera was written more recently it continues the story of the characters from Rossini’s Barber of Seville and Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro. The title character, Rosina, is seen marrying the Count (in Barber of Seville), scorned by him as he lusts after others (in Figaro) and now she has run off with Cherubino, an admirer of hers (in Figaro) whom she is living with, when the Count returns for her. The challenge, says Kathryn, is conveying the mixed emotions and deep anxiety that Rosina is facing by the choices she has to make.
Kathryn won critical acclaim for her recent role in The New York Opera Cooperative’s production of Mozart’s Cosi Fan Tutti. On her performance of the role of Despina it was noted, “Kathryn Papa’s interpretation of the girls’ mischievous maid was playful, flippant and luminous, all at the same time; her singing equally embodied all those qualities with an effortless panache and her Italian was always clear and concise” (Allegro con fuoco)
The performances will be August 17, 21 and 30th at the Rose Nagelburg Theatre of the Baruch Performing Arts Center, 55 Lexington Avenue (25th Street) New York. Tickets are available at www.dellarteopera.org
