Garden City Life is celebrating 30 years of reporting. The first issue came out on Aug. 15, 1985, featuring 32 pages of news, opinions and happenings Garden City (Stewart Manor would start to be covered later.)
In its first year Garden City covered major news stories. Some notable headlines include; Garden City Supports Program to Eliminate Mineola R.R. Grade Crossings, Garden City Plans 49th Annual Mercy Ball, Village Mourns Death Of Mayor Regan, Cathedral Celebrates 100th Anniversary and Dr. Elliot Landon Will Be New Garden City Superintendent of Schools.
A great deal happened during the Life’s first year in print. The Garden City Fire Department celebrated its sixty-fifth year, Dr. Peter Diamondopoulos was named the new president of Adelphi University, the Garden City Chamber of Commerce celebrated the twenty-seventh annual East Festival and Antique Car Parade, the Garden City Hotel became the only hotel located in New York State elected to the prestigious group of 58 Preferred Hotels throughout the world and the Garden City Trojans football team captured the Nassau County Conference II Championship with a 7-0 defeat of rival Mepham after going 9-1 during the regular season.
Over the years, Garden City Life has covered plenty of local stories including the eventual shuttering of St. Paul’s School for Boys and the aftermath of what to do with the standing structure, the numerous triumphs of the Garden City Public School District (both on and off the field), the evolution of the Garden City Public Library, the development of Seventh Street and the state of affairs conducted by the village board of trustees over the past three decades. And there have even been a number of stories the Life has written about that have also had a national impact whether it was the 1993 Colin Ferguson shooting at the Merillon Avenue station or the body blow the Village of Garden City received from the horrific chain of events that occurred on 9/11.
Over time, Garden City Life has gone from black and white to color, used better and brighter paper stock and gone from using an in-house printing press to upping the quality of our product via a fruitful partnership with the Daily News printing plant. It’s all a part of the privilege of being able to serve the citizens of Garden City in covering their community and delivering it in the best manner possible. It’s a fruitful relationship we intend to build upon for the next 30 years.
