Summer of 2015 at the Floral Park Recreation Center enters the home stretch over the next two weeks of scheduled programs for adults and youth. Many exciting activities are still to come for campers during weeks 7 and 8.
Several special events and projects will bring smiles and create memories for hundreds of campers ages 3 through 17. For the preschool and arts and crafts program, supervisor Lauren Krouse will have youngsters completing pirate-related projects like pirate hats, pirate foam mosaics, as well as a floating pirate ship craft during week 7. The ever popular t-shirt tie-dying project is set for week 8. During the final two weeks of Sports Camps, girls will enjoy playing soccer while boys will have a great time playing volleyball.
On Monday, Aug. 17, the Floral Park Recreation Department will host their 7th Annual Olympic Day. All girls and boys grades 4 and above are invited to participate in this fun day that includes running, basketball, soccer, volleyball, football and tennis-style team competition. In addition, on Tuesday, Aug. 18, campers will also have fun with “Challenge Day.” Girls and boys will compete against each other in volleyball, basketball and soccer shootouts. As part of “Challenge Day,” campers and counselors will have the opportunity to play with and against each other.
Championship Thursday: The junior divisions in the morning camps were full of heated competition this past Thursday. In the girls’ basketball camp, the Squids entered the finals in first place and cruised on to win the championship by a final score of 22-16. Team members were Emma Cheslock, Jody Niles, Samantha Ambrose, Chloe Edwards, Kate Lo, Grace Lavin and Kathleen Gayron. In the older division, the Floor beat the Firebirds, 36-30. Team members included Caroline Lubicich, Bethany Goodwin, Sonya Huan, Rachel LeFave, Mia Savignano and Sarah Sepulveda.
For the boy, in a very exciting college league championship, Auburn went onto win the title after defeating OSU in the semi-finals and then the Duke Blue Devils in the championship by a score of 28-14. The Auburn team members included Matt Magyr, James Hedquist, Jason Kozak, Christian Haulsy, Kieran Thompson, Mark Filos, Aaron Yeung, Nolan Lally, Sean Hallack, Brian Lo, Kevin Heir, Matt Ollen, Jack Hammerman, Ryan Sarro, Gregory Forke, and James Kelleher.
In the Super Bowl, the regular season Buccaneers defeated the Jets by a final of 21-7 to reign as 2015 summer champions. The winning team members for the Buccaneers were Brian Hammerman, Nick Cherpelis, Matt Rettinger, Johnny Kosakowski, Tim Cartmell, Steven Sommo, Lowell Sarmiento, David Hughes, Chris Platz, Sean Thomson and Evan Declemente.
The Campers of the Week for week 6 were Dillon Hodgson, Joe Krug, Grace Lavin and Rachel LeFave.
Tennis in the Park: The Annual Fall Classic is set for early September. Registration dates to follow. This past week, youth tennis development stars were Aaron Yeung and Bridget Alcusky, while Greg Alcusky received this week’s most improved award.
