Catharine G. Heyes died on Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2015 at her home in Glen Cove. She was 91 years of age. Born in New York City on May 5, 1924 to Grover C. and Catharine G. O’Neill, she grew up in Oyster Bay, attended Chapin School and graduated Sarah Lawrence College.
An ardent horticulturalist and award-winning gardener, she was recognized throughout the country for her love of flowers and landscaping. Mrs. Heyes was awarded the Garden Club of America Horticultural Achievement Certificate in 1984 and in 1990 the North Country Garden Club President’s Cup for her significant contributions of knowledge. In 1994, she also was the recipient of the Zone III Horticultural Award from the Garden Club of America. She was a Trustee Emeritus of Old Westbury Gardens, having served on the board and garden committee for more than 25 years. She shared her passion for flowers with young and old alike.
When not in her garden she enjoyed playing golf for many years into her 80s and playing bridge with friends.
Her husband of 44 years, Fred L. Heyes, predeceased her in 1990. She is survived by her sons Fred L. Heyes (Anne) and Edward K. Heyes (Linda) as well as four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Brother Grover O’Neill (Beth) predeceased Mrs. Heyes. She is survived by her brother George D. O’Neill (Abby).
A memorial service is planned for Sept. 12, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. at St. John’s of Cold Spring Harbor.
