A 79-year-old man was fatally hit by a vehicle while crossing a road in his hometown of Shirley on Monday morning.

Suffolk County police said Fred Mahnken was crossing William Floyd Parkway when he was struck by a northbound Oldsmobile near Lawrence Road at 11:20 a.m.

The victim was taken to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue, where he was later pronounced dead.

The driver was neither injured nor charged. His vehicle was for a safety check.

Seventh Squad detectives impounded the vehicle, are continuing the investigation and ask anyone with information about this crash to call them at 631-852-8752.
