The Amsterdam at Harborside Senior Community celebrated its fifth anniversary on Sept. 9 with a party. About 150 residents and guests attended for dinner and dancing.
“The majority of residents showed up,” said Sam Guedouar, executive director of the Amsterdam. “They were dressed up, high-end, like they were going to a ball. It was a great celebration.”
Guedouar continued, “We had an entertainer who was singing songs from the old times, from the ’30s and ’40s. So everybody was singing and dancing and having a great time.”
The Amsterdam officially took its first resident on Aug. 31, 2010. “There were a lot of people there who started there five years ago,” said Guedouar. “The original people appreciated the celebration and looked forward to celebrating the good times. They felt pretty good to be here five years.”
Residents look back over the past five years and appreciate the strong friendships they have made. “Some of the best friends they’ve made in their life they made here. They share the same hobbies, the same problems and we do birthday [parties] in the same month for all the residents,” said Guedouar. “They appreciate having new friends in the community. It was great to see the friendship grow within the community the last five years.”
The Amsterdam at Harborside is Nassau County’s first and only life-care community, and it delivers a high level of service, convenience, freedom and security to all those who make their home there. In October of 2012, during and after the events of Hurricane Sandy, the facility served as a safe house and true community focal point, not only for residents and their families, but for many of its own staff and family members.
