The Mineola Mustangs (1-1) fell to the West Hempstead Rams (1-1) 28-6 on Saturday, Sept. 19. Following their season opening win against Great Neck, the Mustangs scored their only touchdown two minutes before halftime with senior quarterback Matt Kosowski throwing a 25 yard pass to junior receiver Quinn Revelant.

At 14-6, the game was still within their grasp, but the Rams overpowered Mineola defensively and scored in each quarter. In the third, while inside the 30 yard line at third and three, West Hempstead intercepted the ball and put the game out of reach at 21-6.

Mustangs head coach Dan Guido divided the playing time under center between Kosowski and junior quarterback Doug Hopkins, and despite the game’s outcome, Guido says he’s encouraged by what he sees out on the field.

“We made some offensive mistakes where we could have scored a couple of times, and the score could have been much closer,” Guido said. “This is best team we’re going to play, I was afraid they would just run over us, but we made it a pretty good game.”

If we had to play a team like this every week, we’d get beat up, but we still have a chance to have a good year,” Guido said.

The Mustangs will face Great Neck South on Saturday, Sept. 26 at 2 p.m.

Correction
In the Sept. 16 edition of the Mineola American, the article titled “Mustangs Scorch Blazers” said the Mineola Mustangs were seeded fifth in 2015. They are seeded 12th.
