Massapequa resident Michele Walker will be running in the TCS NYC Marathon on Nov. 1, representing The Marfan Foundation. She and her husband, Mike Walker, grew up in Levittown and recently made Massapequa their home. Michele will be running to honor Mike, and her father-in-law Bob Walker.
The Marfan Foundation is a nonprofit that fights for victory over Marfan syndrome and related disorders. Marfan syndrome is a life-threatening genetic disorder that most seriously affects the heart, blood vessels and eyes. The foundation does everything possible, including research, advocacy and education, to make sure people can live longer, fuller lives.
Mike recently made a great recovery from his latest heart surgery this past spring. Having the support and love from friends and family without a doubt has made this situation easier to bear. Now that Mike is back to feeling like himself, Michele and her family wanted to do something to help others who suffer with this disease, so she decided to run the NYC Marathon for the Marfan Foundation.
All donations will directly benefit The Marfan Foundation’s mission of saving lives and creating a brighter future for individuals and families affected by Marfan syndrome and related disorders. Michele will be hosting a fundraiser at Governor’s Comedy Club in Levittown Sunday, Oct. 11. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased from Michele ahead of time. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the show starts at 7:30 p.m. There will also be raffles and a 50/50 with all proceeds benefiting the foundation. Food is available and a two drink minimum is required per person at each table. Governor’s Comedy Club is located at 90 Division Ave., Levittown.
As of press time, the team has raised $2,428 so far, close to reaching their goal of $2,500. For those who can not attend but still wish do donate, visit Michele’s fundraiser page at www.crowdrise.com/marfanNYC2015/fundraiser/michelehenschelwalker.
