Waldbaum’s at 40 Great Neck Rd. is still up for auction as A&P is closing, selling or auctioning off its remaining groceries as part of its Chapter 11 proceedings.

As of this afternoon, a company spokesperson for A&P declined to comment about what transpired during the auctions yesterday and today, Oct. 8 and 9.

According to sources familiar with the process, because Waldbaum’s is in Chapter 11, the store is involved in a court supervised auction and the judge who oversees the auction process has to approve a fair bid. If the store did not receive an adequate bid, it will be reentered into the auction process again at a later date. At this time, no additional information is available.

Last week, a Waldbaum’s employee who asked not to be identified said, “At last week’s auction, there were no bids, so there are two more auctions this Thursday and Friday.” But another week went by and, still, no one knows the fate of the neighborhood’s popular spot for grocery shopping.

Employees are still waiting for word on what will become of their workplace and residents are trying to figure out what they will do if no bids are accepted.

Sondra Mayer, a Great Neck resident for 42 years said, “My car knows the way automatically. That’s our main source for grocery shopping. That’s how we survive. It’s amazing that no one wants to provide food for our very rich community.”

The Great Neck Record has been in contact with A&P’s corporate offices and are awaiting news of future auctions. We will keep you updated on the latest developments.

In the meantime, please share what you’re hoping will replace Waldbaum’s.
