Espoir Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from Sept. 15 through Oct. 15, by celebrating the history, culture and contributions of citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. On Oct. 14, students of Espoir Youth Program Inc. in Westbury discussed a few individuals who were the first Hispanics to make history in their own way.

Espoir_102815ALenny Jean, a 9-year-old who attends Powells Lane School, read about Roberto Clemente, the first Hispanic inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Veengeleen Pierre, a 9-year-old who also attends Powells Lane School, read about Sonia Sotomayor, who was the first Hispanic U.S District Supreme Court Justice. Phaben Gene, a 9-year-old who attends Park Ave School, read about Desi Arnaz, the actor who played a Cuban musician on the hit show I Love Lucy. Ruchama Michel, a Powells Lane School student, read about Dr. Ellen Ochoa, who was the first Hispanic woman to go to space.

The Hispanic culture is also known for its food, attire and music. Six students performed the Dominican dance the merengue, wearing ethnic attire and representing their culture.

The event came to a close with traditional Hispanic food and a question and answer session with students and special guest Mrs. Maggie Malito, the Executive Director of Nassau County’s office of youth services.
