It feels like October just flew right by. Suddenly it’s 30 degrees colder and Halloween is right around the corner. Before you go out to try and scavenge a costume among the dreaded leftover racks in the Halloween stores, consider making your own costume out of clothes and other items you have around your house.
1. Cowboy – If you have a plaid shirt, a pair of jeans and some brown boots, you have almost everything you need to be a cowboy for Halloween. The only other item you’ll have to find is a cowboy hat, which you can quickly pick up at any costume store if you or someone you know doesn’t have one already.
2. Gift – If you have a large box lying around the house that you just haven’t gotten around to breaking down and putting outside with the trash, this may be your opportunity to recycle it into a costume. Cut a hole in the bottom for your head to fit through, then cover the rest of it in wrapping paper. You can even wear a bow on your head to complete to look.

3. Tourist – Living in New York, we all know exactly what tourists look like. They’re the ones with the cameras around their necks, the fanny packs and the giant backpacks who never seem to know where they are going. Although secretly we know that we probably look just as lost when we’re traveling in new places, the tourist look is a fun one to mimic. Throw on a pair of sunglasses, an outrageous shirt, a big hat and any other accessories that you deem touristy. (Photo from www.thereal.com)
4. Nerd – Dressing up as a nerd is simple and fun. Pop out the lenses to a pair of 3D glasses and wrap thick, white tape around the bridge. Throw on a white button up, a bow tie and suspenders. Your pants should be rolled up to mid-calf, showing off an extravagant pair of socks.
5. Pajama Party – Who wouldn’t want to find an excuse to wear their pajamas in public? Throw on a party hat, and you’ll get to be comfy and festive all night long.

6. Rosie the Riveter – Rosie the Riveter is an icon for female empowerment and, luckily, her ensemble is easy to pull off. All you need is a red lipstick, a blue button up and a red bandanna to tie around your pinned up hair. (Costume from www.sheknows.com)
7. Picture in a Frame – If you have a large frame somewhere in your house, or even just some oak tag or cardboard that can be cut into one, you can easily create a “picture in a frame” costume. For a laugh, you could even recreate an old picture of yourself that you or your family has hung up in the house.

8. Witch – A witch costume can be easily created with a black dress, tights, black boots and a witch’s hat.
9. Zombie – From The Walking Dead to iZombie, these undead creatures are everywhere these days. As long as you can get your hands on a pair of scissors and some face makeup, this costume is extremely simple to make. Cut up some old clothes, whiten your face, put black makeup around your eyes and add a little red “blood,” which can be created out of food dye.
